The strike, called by the Kenya Airport Workers’ Union (KAWU), caused hundreds of travellers to be unable to take their flights.
Workers at Kenya’s largest airport, Jomo Kenyatta, on Wednesday staged a strike against an agreement between the government and India’s multinational Adani Group.

The general secretary of KAWU, Moss Ndiema, said “The government has not been clear and is not sincere. We have not been provided with all the documents that we have requested. All we want is for the Government to halt the Adani plan”.
The agreement with Adani Group would involve renovating Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, constructing a runway and a terminal in exchange for the company to operate the airport for a period of 30 years.
According to the KAWU, implementation of the agreement would result in job losses and lower terms of service for those who choose to stay.
Implementation of the agreement was temporarily suspended on Monday by the High Court until a case is heard by the Kenya Bar Association and the Kenyan Human Rights Commission.
Both organizations maintain that the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, in addition to being one of the most important airports in East Africa, is a strategic national asset, so that implementation of the plan would violate the principles of good governance, transparency and responsible use of public money.
